Unit 3 Reflection

Image
Reflection We chose to present this project in the form of a podcast. We wanted to do something different than what we had not done in previous units and a podcast is a fun and interactive way to present our findings. We also chose this medium because we were each doing interviews it was a simple way of being able to convey what we learned in our interviews, to our audience. It can be difficult to ensure that what the people you are interviewing are saying is taken the way in which they mean it, when it is in writing. With a podcast a listener can feel like they are in the room while the interview is happening. This ensures that comments are not taken out of context, as social interaction can be hard to embody by print. Our topic can sometimes be a sensitive one, it was important to us to be respectful. Because of this we decided it would be a better idea have our interviewers voices heard to ensure that our conversations were not misconstrued. Podcasts have been rising in populari...

Unit 3 Portfolio

Being surrounded by technology when my age group was growing up was not really a thing. Kids struggled in my school by not having the resources available in order to help them succeed. One of my latest classes in high school had integrated social media into its lesson plan where we, as students, had a forum to speak our minds and have input in the class. This is seen everywhere by people taking their personal experiences to social media, when big news conglomerates are not showing the people that are personally affected by certain policies, events, or tragedies that are happening in our country, and around the world. I feel that having an open mind and speaking up begins when you are young and in the education system. Technology should be implemented in our classrooms and lesson plans to not only help kids succeed, but to help them speak their mind. Our final project is here

Graphic Novels

Image
The graphic novel I chose from the Library is called Nancy Loves Sluggo. This book of graphic novels contains little stories of the two characters, Nancy and Sluggo, and how they interact with each other and the people around them. There is not a long story here like there usually is in a lot of comic books and graphic novels. It is more like the comic section of a newspaper, where there are 3 or 4 boxes for a short cartoon. This book is that except they compiled thousands of short 3 or 4 boxed graphics. I guess graphic novels can be related to technology in the fact that is something that is not necessarily educational or fulfilling, but is something that can keep a person entertained. I do not think it is really related in technology in any other way. It is a book. Most things that are being compared are in the same medium. The graphic novel Nancy Loves Sluggo does not really contain any types of technology. It is almost like it is set in the 60's, and reminds me of Betty Bop ...

Film Review

http://variety.com/2015/tv/reviews/tv-review-espns-i-hate-christian-laettner-1201449654/ The documentary I viewed was one from an ESPN 30 for 30 titled "I Hate Christian Laettner". This is one of my favorite documentaries of all time, so I had no problem watching it again. It is about a man who used to play for the Duke University, that did not have the best attitude or reputation, but was still an amazing basketball player. " Partly an exploration of Duke’s success in those years, partly a look at specific elements that motivated Laettner-haters, the project broadly resonates for a simple reason pertaining to the current state of college hoops — namely, that players of Laettner’s quality seldom hang around long enough anymore to engender antipathy from anybody." This is one of the most entertaining people in sports history, especially because of how he played in college in the 90's and moving throughout his life and career after that.  Clearly, part of Laett...

Unit 3 Summary

In this final unit, we will be using the paper/ persuasive argument that we used in Unit 2. We will use our argument for unit 2 and place it into a technology medium that we are used to using, and present it in a different way. This is in order to transport our paper to the digital realm. Make sure to make the medium that is something that is easy to publish, but not something that was used in unit 1 or 2. Make sure to keep going with the argument instead of just reiterating the information you put in 1 and 2. You can also form a group in order to tackle this project. At the end, you will have to write another reflection. This will be based on unit 3 and focus on how you chose your medium and how you were able to make your project happen.

Unit 2 Reflection

I thoroughly enjoyed this unit as I tied in my piece with things that are very relative to today’s current events and society. The audience that I decided to try and reach were people who only see the shortcomings of all these technological advancements, and also do not look deeper into how some aspects of technology, like social media, are not just for people to post selfies and be shallow, but also be a medium for people to make change, create movements, and allow their voices and stories to be heard when large news corporations are not letting their stories be told. The specific rhetoric language I used was somewhat subtle, but I kept mentioning innovation and bringing my piece back into the perspective of the human race. “Human life has always strived towards innovation. The mind has created things that were at one time, unimaginable, and now society is at a place that is a whirlwind of technology and accessibility of whatever information a person wants, or needs, in an instant. Human life has always striven towards innovation. The mind has created things that were at one time, unimaginable, and now society is at a place that is a whirlwind of technology and accessibility of whatever information a person wants, or needs, in an instant. This innovation of information has led the way to new ideals, values, and a way of life that the world has never seen. I often catch myself thinking about how technological advancements are affecting our society, but I am always conflicted to if it is helping or hurting it. It is connecting the entire world, increasing economies and trade, and giving people voices, who usually do not have one, that they use to share their opinions with anyone who will look or listen, and those are just some of the positives. On the contrary, even though there is an increase in digital connections, it is causing humans to become desensitized, decreasing face to face communication and compassion, and exposing our children to change whatever ...

Unit 2 Freewrites

Image
This free write was meaningful to me because it made me think about the first unit and how I was going to improve in unit 2. It made me think about my decision making towards the unit and what I was going to do differently. This free write was also based upon how, as a class, we all had to have the same Baron source, but everyone used it differently in their papers. I like reflecting on the past work and unit because I like to look over how I did and what I can do differently to benefit myself in the future.

Unit 2 Draft

Human life has always strived towards innovation. The mind has created things that were at one time, unimaginable, and now society is at a place that is a whirlwind of technology and accessibility of whatever information a person wants, or needs, in an instant. This innovation of information has led the way to new ideals, values, and a way of life that the world has never seen. There is social media, a basis for people to post about their lives, and there is more ways to communicate globally than ever before. It is a popular topic to think how technological advancements are affecting our society, but it always seems to come down to one specific argument; is all these technological advancements helping or hurting our civilization . It is connecting the entire world, increasing economies and trade, and giving people voices, who usually do not have one, that they use to share their opinions with anyone who will look or listen, and those are just some of the positives. On the contrary, e...

Unit 2 Library

My personal history with the library is a very love/hate relationship. Whenever I am there, I get a crazy amount of work done, but I also associate it with having a lot of work and being stressed out. I usually go to my room and do a lot of my work in there, but when I have a gigantic work load I go to the library to focus and get my things done quickly with no distractions. I usually get the individual rooms that are on the perimeter of the library, so there are no chances for me to get distracted. My relationship with technology has definitely changed my relationship with the brick and mortar library because I do not go there to check out books very often because I am able to search online databases for scholarly articles, PDFs, and websites that provide the information I need for what is assigned. Being in whitman, they do not ask us to use the library, but instead ask us to use databases. It is kind of sad and nostalgic taking out a book from the library; it reminds me of being in...

Abstract/Pitch

Pitch: I often catch myself thinking about how technological advancements are affecting our society, but I am always conflicted to if it is helping or hurting it. It is connecting the entire world, increasing economies and trade, and giving people voices, who usually do not have one, that they use to share their opinions with anyone who will look or listen, and those are just some of the positives. On the contrary, even though there is an increase in digital connections, it is causing humans to become desensitized, decreasing face to face communication and compassion, and exposing our children to change whatever they want about themselves, whatever they can find on the internet, and allowing them to participate in the fake reality of social media. I would like to pose a pitch that allows to show some virtues and shortcomings of the technological advancements, such as communication, social media, and journalism, our society has generated. It is no surprise that the majority of peo...

Research Questions

I have posed my questions to my 3 roommates; Rachel, Liv, and Julia, and this is how they evaluated my questions.  1. Is social media and alternative journalism helping or hurting the journalism/news industry? Rachel: "I like this question because most things technology based revolves around social media, but this poses a completely different way that technology can affect an industry." Julia: "This is an interesting thought, I am not sure how it would affect something like that." Liv: "Being in Newhouse and taking a lot of journalism classes, I would say it has a huge affect on the industry because it can be a good source and people use it for good reasons, but it can also lead to rumors and news that is fake." 2. Is face to face communication depleting in society and how is that affecting human relationships? Rachel: "I want to be a counselor/therapist when I graduate, and technology is having a huge affect on and straining a lot of rel...

Unit 1 Reflection

From the unit 1 assignment, I feel that the sources that I chose accurately represent what I want to speak about as the units go on and this forms into a paper. I am choosing the focus my ideas on how technology has influenced and changed the way we communicate in society, how it has changed journalism and provided a second source called alternate journalism, and how social media has and is going to affect our generations and younger generations self image. I feel that the quality of the sources I have chosen are very good and well written. I have sources that range from news articles to scholarly articles with different facts, statistics, and study cases. The first source that I have is From Pencils to Pixels by Dennis Baron, and I think it is a very in depth and good source about how not only technology has influenced writing, but also has influenced communication. Baron states that the advancements that were made with the computer make humanists mad, but other advancements of ...

Unit 1 Portfolio

1. From Pencils to Pixels by Dennis Baron- http://www.english.illinois.edu/-people-/faculty/debaron/essays/pencils.htm Baron started his article off with the idea that the computer is going to change literacy and writing, for better or for worse. This comes with going from the innovation of the typewriter, and then going all the way to the invention of the computer and the "world wide web".   Baron also admits his positivism and reliance on computers, and how it has changed his own writing for the past 15 years. " I readily admit my dependence on the new technology of writing. Once, called away to a meeting whose substance did not command my unalloyed attention, I began drafting on my conference pad a memo I needed to get out to my staff by lunchtime. I found that I had become so used to composing virtual prose at the keyboard I could no longer draft anything coherent directly onto a piece of paper. It wasn’t so much that I couldn’t think of the words, but the physic...

Free Write from 1.30.18

Free Write on 1/30/18-- Text video about child. "We just watched a film on texts and how these 2 people met and ended up having an unplanned baby, and the father leaves. this really resonated with me because my father also abandoned my mom and I when I was very young, so I can really relate to the situation. It is upsetting seeing that that child is going to have to grow up without a father. Being almost 20, the absence of my father still affects me in my day to day life, and knowing that this child is going to have the same confusion and heartbreak and questions I had is disturbing. even though it still affects me, I have come to terms with what has happened in my life, and hopefully this child will too.  " The reason I chose this to include in my unit 1 assignment is because this is one of the first things that I have ever seen in a class setting that really resonates with my own life. My father, being absent since I was about 4 or 5, has been changed a lot in my life, ...

4th Annotation Draft

4th Annotation The Impact of Technology on Journalism by John Pavlik -  http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/14616700050028226?needAccess=true This source I found on google by searching the phrase "influence technology communication" in the scholarly articles search. This article talks about how journalism has changed since the times of Julius Caesar. to now, where our society is defined by technology. "This article proposes that technological change influences journalism in at least four ways. Technological change affects: (1) the way journalists do their job; (2) the nature of news content; (3) the structure and organization of the newsroom and the news industry; and (4) the nature of the relationships between and among news organizations, journalists and their many public's, including audiences, competitors, news sources, sponsors and those who seek to regulate or control the press." (Pavlik, 1) This article also states how technology has change...

Surveys/Polls/Quizzes

Image
In the array of vast quizzes and surveys that are available on the internet, I chose to take one from a website called Buzzfeed, which is notorious for having fun and interesting personality quizzes. They range from quizzes on your horoscopes and personality, to crazy quizzes such as "Which shoes predict what kind of tacos you like". The survey that I decided to take was “We Know Which Cast Member from ‘Jersey Shore’ You Are”. It was more of a fun quiz, and my friends and I being a fan of this show, it was very entertaining to take. It had funny options that related to the show, and it was not very long. It made references to the show such as their shore house and sayings that they had such as “G.T.L” which stands for gym, tan, laundry, which they assumed as a lifestyle. The results that I got was that I was the most similar to Jenny, also known as JWOWW. I also had a couple of my friends take it, and they all had a variety of the different cast members. The answers wer...
